Running your own show
No HR desk picks a plan for you. Three things Florida owners tell us first:
Tax credits use your household income for the year you are covered. For a business, that usually means net profit after costs, not gross sales. We help you land on a careful full-year number.
Forming an LLC does not open a group plan by itself. If the only people on payroll are you and your spouse, a personal or family plan is the usual path.
Networks differ by plan and by county. We check each plan's network list for your doctors and nearby hospitals before you pick, from the Panhandle to the Keys.

Profit math
For Marketplace tax credits, what counts is household income for the year your plan covers.
Three common paths
Plans that may come with tax credits based on income. Enrollment opens once a year, or sooner after a qualifying life event.
Outside the Marketplace, applications are often taken any time of year. Some plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. See our self-employed nationwide PPO page.
Under current law, starting in 2026, IRS rules treat bronze and catastrophic plans available through the Marketplace as HSA-eligible. See our HSA guide.

Working with Paul
Daniels Health Advisors, owned by Paul Daniels, is an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states. Florida sole proprietors, LLC owners, and new founders call us when they leave a job plan or come off a spouse's coverage. We usually begin with Marketplace plans and any tax credit your profit may allow. In a high-profit year, we can also show private PPO options. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

Before you pick a plan
If profit beats your estimate, part of a tax credit can come due when you file. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. We help you set a careful number and update it. You will leave with:
A checklist for
Self-employed questions
No. It is the same personal and family coverage anyone can buy. What changes is how you estimate income and how you may deduct premiums.
Usually not. Group plans usually need at least one eligible employee who is not the owner or the owner's spouse. Rules vary by carrier and state.
Use an honest estimate for the coverage year, including any job pay you had before you started. If your income changes and you get tax credits, report it to the Marketplace.
Under current law, starting in 2026, IRS rules treat bronze and catastrophic plans available through the Marketplace as HSA-eligible. Other HSA rules still apply, so ask your tax pro before you open or fund one.
Maybe. If you are self-employed and your business makes a profit, your premiums may be deductible on IRS Form 7206. You can't take it for any month you could get a subsidized job plan, including through a spouse. For tax questions, talk with a tax professional.
For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 20, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 plans runs from November 1, 2026, to January 15, 2027. As of October 20, 2026, a federal appeal about these dates is pending (City of Columbus v. Kennedy, 4th Cir. No. 26-1938), with oral argument set for October 30, 2026. Confirm the dates before you enroll. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a special enrollment period. Losing job-based coverage is one example.
