Buying your own plan
Most people who shop on their own ask the same three things:
In Florida, nearly 95% of people who picked a Marketplace plan for 2026 got a premium tax credit. Yours depends on household income and size.
A low premium can still mean a high yearly total. People who qualify for extra help with deductibles and copays generally need a silver plan to get them. See our bronze vs silver guide.
Children may qualify for Florida KidCare, the state's income-based health insurance for kids, and you can apply any time of year. Otherwise they can join a family plan.

Household math
Tax credits are figured from what your whole tax household expects to earn in the year you are covered.
Three common paths
ACA plans that may come with tax credits. Open enrollment comes once a year, and a move, a new baby, or losing other coverage can open a special enrollment period. See our Florida open enrollment guide.
Bought outside the Marketplace. You can often apply any time of year, though some ask health questions and approval is not guaranteed. Compare in our private PPO vs Marketplace guide.

Working with Paul
At Daniels Health Advisors, an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states, Paul Daniels helps Florida singles, couples, and parents who lose a job plan, move, or want to compare their options. Most households start with a Marketplace plan and a tax credit check. If you get little or no tax credit, we can also show private PPO options. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

Before you pick a plan
Estimate too low, and some of the tax credit you used may have to be repaid at tax time. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. So we build the household figure with you, line by line. Your call ends with:
A checklist for
Individual and family questions
It depends on your income, age, zip code, and the care you need. Many people pay less after a tax credit. For tax questions, talk with a tax professional. We compare total cost, not just the premium. See our affordable health insurance in Florida guide.
Yes. You can buy a Marketplace plan during open enrollment or after a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage. You can often apply for a private plan any time of year. Some ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed.
Yes. Children may qualify for Florida KidCare, or they can be on a separate plan. We help you see which mix costs less.
No. Private plans in this sense are sold outside the Marketplace. They do not come with premium tax credits, and some ask health questions. Marketplace plans follow ACA rules and may come with tax credits. See private health insurance in Florida.
For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 20, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 plans runs from November 1, 2026, to January 15, 2027. As of October 20, 2026, a federal appeal about these dates is pending (City of Columbus v. Kennedy, 4th Cir. No. 26-1938), with oral argument set for October 30, 2026. Confirm the dates before you enroll. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a special enrollment period. Losing job-based coverage is one example.
