Questions we hear

Two people,
one plan?

Half of San Diego residents are younger than about 36, according to the Census Bureau. Couples here ask us these.

“We just got married. Do we have to wait for open enrollment?”

Often not. Covered California lists marriage as a life event. You usually have 60 days from the wedding to pick a plan.

“Does our help change now that we're married?”

It can. Help is based on household income and size, so we figure it again for the two of you.

“Should we be on one plan or two?”

It depends. We compare one family plan with two separate plans and show the yearly cost of each.

How we help

Help for couples
in San Diego.

We can show California plans from several insurers side by side. For each one, we add a year of premiums to the deductible so you can compare totals.

Married couples who get a tax credit usually need to file a joint tax return. A tax professional can help with your case.

If you plan to grow your family, we can show what each plan charges for pregnancy care and delivery.

If you both have doctors you like, we check them in each plan before you pick.

When is open enrollment in California for 2027?

As of October 26, 2026, Covered California lists open enrollment as November 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027. A court case about these dates, City of Columbus v. Kennedy, is still on appeal, with argument set for October 30, 2026. Confirm the dates before you enroll. Sign up by December 31 if you want coverage on January 1.

Has California expanded Medicaid?

Yes. As of October 26, 2026, KFF shows California among the states that adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion. The program there is called Medi-Cal.

What if one of us has a job plan?

If the job plan can cover a spouse, we compare it with buying your own. What it costs to add a spouse can affect whether you get a tax credit.

What if we're expecting a baby?

Under current law, pregnancy and newborn care are essential health benefits that Marketplace plans cover. A birth also opens a window to add the baby.

Can my spouse join my plan in the middle of the year?

Yes, after a marriage, if you report it within the time allowed. We help you time the start date.

Do we need our marriage certificate?

Covered California may ask for proof of the marriage. Keep a copy handy.

Is San Diego in one county?

Yes. The city is in San Diego County, which also has many other cities.

Can we keep separate plans?

Yes. Some couples keep two plans. We show the full-year cost both ways.

Open enrollment starts November 1
