Questions we hear

Getting your tax
credit right?

About 26 in 100 Raleigh workers mostly work from home, the Census Bureau reports. People with a tax credit here ask us these.

“Which income do I put on the form?”

Your expected 2027 household income, not last year's. HealthCare.gov counts income for you, your spouse, and anyone you claim on your taxes.

“What happens at tax time?”

You get Form 1095-A and use it to fill out Form 8962. That compares the credit you used during the year with the amount you qualify for.

“What if my pay changes mid-year?”

Update your application. Then your monthly credit is figured again for the rest of the year, which helps keep it close to right.

Straight answers

Raleigh health insurance questions.

When does open enrollment for 2027 run in North Carolina?

North Carolina uses HealthCare.gov. As of October 30, 2026, HealthCare.gov shows 2027 open enrollment running November 1, 2026, to January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates, City of Columbus v. Kennedy, is still in the courts. Check HealthCare.gov for the latest dates. Choose by December 15 for a January 1 start. Choices made by January 15 begin February 1.

Did North Carolina expand Medicaid?

Yes. As of October 30, 2026, KFF lists North Carolina as adopting the ACA Medicaid expansion, starting December 1, 2023. NC Medicaid covers people who qualify.

What if I used more credit than I qualified for?

HealthCare.gov says you repay the difference when you file your taxes. If you used less than you qualified for, you claim the rest as a credit. For your own taxes, talk with a tax professional.

Do I need my 1095-A before I file?

Yes. HealthCare.gov says not to file until you have a correct Form 1095-A. You can find it in your HealthCare.gov account.

Can I take less credit each month?

Yes. HealthCare.gov says you can use some, all, or none of your credit each month. Any amount you qualify for but don't use comes back when you file.

What county is Raleigh in?

Most of Raleigh is in Wake County, and it is the county seat. A small part reaches into Durham County.

What do I bring to the call?

Recent pay stubs, last year's tax return, your ZIP code, and each person's age.

Is a lower monthly price always the better deal?

Not always. A low monthly price can come with a high deductible. We add both up for a year of care.

Open enrollment starts November 1
