Questions we hear

Paid by
the project?

About 12 in 100 Los Angeles adults ages 19 to 64 had only a plan they bought themselves, Census Bureau figures show. Creative workers here ask us these.

“I worked three shows last year and one so far this year. What income do I use?”

Use your closest estimate for 2027, after work costs. If a big job comes in, update Covered California so your help stays right.

“Could I qualify for Medi-Cal in a slow year?”

Maybe. Covered California says one application covers both Covered California and Medi-Cal.

“Do royalties and side jobs count?”

Many kinds of pay count as income. A tax professional can tell you how yours is counted, and we use that number.

How we help

Help for creative work
in Los Angeles.

We can line up California plans from more than one insurer. For each one, we show the monthly price after any help and a full-year total.

Los Angeles County is large, and plan lists can change from one part of it to another. We start with your home ZIP code.

Some creative workers earn most of their pay in a few busy months. We help you turn that into one number for the whole year.

Two plans can cost about the same each month but use very different groups of doctors and hospitals. We show you who is in each one.

  • Help for creative and project-based workers
  • Licensed in 20 U.S. states · Agent NPN 20986580 · CA License 4526037
  • You do not pay us for our help. We are paid by the insurance companies when you enroll. Your price for a plan is the same whether you use us or sign up on your own. Commissions can differ by company.

Straight answers

Los Angeles health insurance questions.

What are the 2027 sign-up dates in Los Angeles?

Angelenos use Covered California. As of October 26, 2026, it lists the 2027 open enrollment period as November 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027. A court case about these dates, City of Columbus v. Kennedy, is still on appeal, with argument set for October 30, 2026. Confirm the dates before you enroll. Coverage begins January 1 if you sign up on or before December 31. A January sign-up begins February 1.

Did California take the ACA Medicaid expansion?

Yes. KFF, as of October 26, 2026, counts California among expansion states. The state's Medicaid program goes by the name Medi-Cal.

Do Californians have to carry health coverage?

Most do. As of October 26, 2026, the state requires most residents to have coverage. Going without it may mean a penalty on your California tax return, unless an exemption applies. The Franchise Tax Board has the details.

What if I get a staff job on a show with benefits?

You can end your Covered California plan when the job plan begins. Report the change so any help stops on time.

Can I see doctors near the studio and near home?

Only if they are in your plan's network. We look up the ones you use most.

Do I need my last tax return?

It helps. Your last return, your 1099 forms, and any pay stubs give us a better estimate.

Is Los Angeles its own county?

No. The city of Los Angeles is in Los Angeles County, which also holds many other cities.

What should I bring to the call?

Your ZIP code, the ages of everyone on the plan, and a list of your doctors and drugs.

Open enrollment starts November 1
