Questions we hear

Trying to keep
costs down?

About 6 in 100 Hoover residents under 65 had no health coverage, per the Census Bureau. Here is what budget-minded families ask.

“Do I qualify for a tax credit?”

It depends on your household size, expected 2027 income, and whether a job plan is offered to you. We run the numbers with you.

“What is extra help on silver plans?”

At certain incomes, silver plans can come with lower deductibles and copays. You only get them if you pick a silver plan.

“Can my kids get coverage even if I can't afford mine?”

Children may qualify for Alabama's ALL Kids or Medicaid at incomes where adults don't. We check everyone in the household.

How we help

Budget help
in Hoover.

Since we work with several insurers, we can compare Alabama plans next to each other. We show the price after any tax credit and the yearly total.

A small change in your income estimate can move you in or out of extra help on silver plans. We take care to get the estimate right so you don't miss help you qualify for.

Families sometimes split: kids on a children's program, adults on a marketplace plan. We compare yearly totals for the whole household.

We also look at whether a plan's network includes the doctors and hospitals your family already uses in the Birmingham area.

If a job plan is offered to only one spouse, we check whether the family cost counts as affordable under federal rules.

  • Help checking the tax credits you may qualify for
  • Licensed in 20 U.S. states
  • You do not pay us for our help. We are paid by the insurance companies when you enroll. Your price for a plan is the same whether you use us or sign up on your own. Commissions can differ by company.

Hoover health insurance questions.

When is open enrollment in Alabama for 2027?

Alabama uses HealthCare.gov. As of October 22, 2026, under current law, open enrollment runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A federal appeal about open enrollment dates is pending (City of Columbus v. Kennedy, 4th Cir. No. 26-1938), with oral argument set for October 30, 2026. Confirm the dates before you enroll. Pick a plan by December 15 for coverage starting January 1.

Has Alabama expanded Medicaid?

No. As of October 22, 2026, Alabama has not adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion, according to KFF. Some adults with low incomes may not qualify for Medicaid or a tax credit. We check your household's options.

Does a bronze plan cost the least?

It often has a low premium, but if you qualify for extra help on silver plans, a silver plan can cost less over the year.

What if my income changes?

Report it on HealthCare.gov. Your tax credit can go up or down.

What is a cost-sharing reduction?

It's the formal name for the extra help on silver plans at certain incomes.

Does a job plan offer affect my tax credit?

Yes. If an affordable job plan is offered to you, you may not get a tax credit. We look at your offer.

Can I pay my premium each month?

Yes. Your first payment starts the plan, then you pay monthly.

Do I need to report a new baby?

Yes. A birth lets you change plans within 60 days and can raise your tax credit.

Open enrollment starts November 1
