Questions we hear

Covering the
whole family?

Census Bureau figures show about 15 in 100 Birmingham residents under 65 had no health coverage. Parents here ask us these.

“Do my kids need to be on my plan?”

Not always. Children may qualify for ALL Kids or Medicaid while the parents get a Marketplace plan. We check each child.

“How is our tax credit figured?”

It is based on your household size and what you expect to earn in 2027. More people in the home can change the number.

“Our kids have a doctor we like. Can they keep that doctor?”

Only if the doctor is in the plan's network. We look the doctor up in each plan before you pick.

How we help

Family help
in Birmingham.

We can line up Alabama plans from more than one insurer. For each one, we show the monthly price after any tax credit and the most your family could pay in a year.

ALL Kids is Alabama's low-cost plan for kids under 19 who qualify. HealthCare.gov says you can apply for Medicaid and CHIP any time of year.

If one parent has a job plan, we compare adding the family to it with buying a separate family plan.

Each Birmingham plan has its own list of children's doctors and hospitals. We look for the ones your family sees.

Straight answers

Birmingham health insurance questions.

When is open enrollment in Alabama for 2027?

Alabama families sign up on HealthCare.gov. As of October 27, 2026, HealthCare.gov shows open enrollment for 2027 running November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates, City of Columbus v. Kennedy, is still in the courts. Check HealthCare.gov for the latest dates. Choose by December 15 for a January 1 start. Choose by January 15 for a February 1 start.

Did Alabama expand Medicaid?

No. As of October 27, 2026, KFF does not count Alabama among the states that adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion. Children may still qualify for Medicaid or ALL Kids.

What if we have a baby during the year?

A new baby usually opens a 60-day window to add the child or change plans. Under current law, Marketplace plans cover pregnancy and newborn care.

Are checkups for kids covered?

Under current law, Marketplace plans cover many preventive services for children, like well-child visits and shots, at no cost in the network.

What if our income changes during the year?

Update HealthCare.gov when it changes. That keeps your tax credit close to right, so there are fewer surprises at tax time.

Is Birmingham in one county?

No. Most of Birmingham is in Jefferson County, and a small part is in Shelby County.

What should I bring to the call?

Everyone's age, your ZIP code, your expected 2027 income, and your family's doctors and drugs.

Can each child be on a different program?

Yes. Some kids in a family may qualify for a program while others join a plan. We check each one.

Open enrollment starts November 1
